Research Support for Hypnosis

You may have guessed that the most popular reason people seek out clinical hypnosis is for weight loss-by far. All of those people are seeking out hypnosis for weight loss for one main reason-it works very well for most people. So, you are in good company. Studies show that hypnosis is one of the very few weight loss approaches strongly supported by clinical research to successfully promote weight loss. For instance, in a recent massive review of 31 different research studies covering 13 different popular weight loss approaches, British scientists found that only two approaches produced significant, reliable weight loss success: hypnotherapy and taking supplements containing the illegal substance ephedrine (Pittler & Ernst, 2005).

Since taking ephedrine-based products (also called "ephedra" or "ephedra sinca") has been banned for being extremely dangerous and unhealthy, that leaves hypnosis as the healthy, effective choice. In sum, this massive research study concluded that a combination hypnosis/behavior change program is by far the best and most effective weight loss approach.
